Mane did the damage for Liverpool
Mane did the damage for Liverpool

Sadio Mane struck a quickfire first-half double as Liverpool returned to form with a 2-0 Premier League defeat of Tottenham at Anfield.

The Senegal forward, badly missed during the African Nations Cup, netted in the 16th and 18th minutes and twice went close to a hat-trick as the Reds powered to their first league win of 2017.

Harry Kane hit the post for a lacklustre Spurs in the second half but a flag was raised for offside and the Reds eased to victory.

Sadio Mane. Liverpool's form dipped alarmingly during the Senegal forward's absence for the recent African Nations Cup, and here he showed just what they missed during that period. Mane was electric, particularly in the first half, when he ran Spurs left-back Ben Davies ragged and struck twice. He might even have had four by the break, so much did Spurs struggle to contain him.

Liverpool were rampant in the early stages and pieced together a number of good attacks. The most exhilarating passage of play resulted in their second goal. Mane robbed Eric Dier to create the opening and then finished off from close range after Hugo Lloris produced fine saves to deny Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool's victory was their 16th against Tottenham at Anfield in the Premier League - more than against any other current top-flight side.
