Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has escaped unhurt after his car ploughed into the central reservation of a rain soaked motorway on Monday.

World Cup winner Mertesacker is reported to have lost control of his car near Arsenal's training ground in Hertfordshire amid treacherously wet conditions, with police attending the scene of the crash.

However, Mertesacker was merely shaken and not injured in the incident and it will not delay his return from an injury that kept him out of Arsenal's game against Stoke last Sunday.

“Per had an accident after he left training this morning when he went onto the M1 returning home," confirmed an Arsenal source.

“The car aquaplaned into the crash area on the central reservation. He was shaken up but not injured. No other vehicles were involved and there was no one else in his car.

“It’s not a big deal. Per is fine and ready to return to training.”

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will be hoping to have Mertesacker back to full fitness in the coming days, with vital Champions League and Premier League dates in the Gunners diary.
