The latest bizarre claim about Manchester United suggest that they will sign Zlatan Ibrahimovic as a free agent before he moves into a coaching role when he hangs up his boots at the club.

A report in Dutch paper De Telegraaf says that Swedish international will the first signing of new boss Jose Mourinho and that he could become an assistant coach at Old Trafford once his playing days end.

The sensational claim comes as, at the time of writing, Louis van Gaal is still the official manager of Manchester United.

His immenent departure was widely reported before midday but as it stands, the Dutchman is still in the hotseat, and Mourinho is still technically unemployed.

Earlier today Van Gaal was spotted entering training, followed by well known employment lawyer and LMA representative Paul Gilroy.

An official announcement by the club on the situation had been expected at around 1pm.

Van Gaal, who led his side to victory in the FA Cup final just two days ago, has lost his job after an otherwise disappointing campaign, which was characterised by a lacklustre, conservative playing style.

United were eliminated from the Champions League group stages in December and then failed to qualify for next season’s edition of the tournament, finishing fifth in the Premier League.

However, Van Gaal, who replaced David Moyes in 2014, was always unlikely to see out the final year of his three-year contract at Old Trafford, even if a top-four finish had been salvaged.
