Mourinho sniggers at Liverpool after Anfield draw
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho could not resist a verbal jab at Liverpool after his side played out at 0-0 draw at Anfield, as he suggested the Reds can no longer be considered as ‘the last wonder of the world’.
Mourinho’s defensive tactics frustrated Liverpool into submission in front of a muted Anfield crowd and while his side had just 35 per-cent possession over the course of the match, he made no excuses for a game plan that produced the result he desired.
“They are not the last wonder of the world like you say they are,” said a cheeky Mourinho, who was clearly unimpressed by the hype around Klopp’s side in the opening weeks of the season.
“We knew it would be very difficult for them to score a goal. We tried to score a goal, but they are a good team.
“It was a very difficult game for us, but I think it was more difficult for them.
“The game was completely under control, not just from the tactical point of view, but also the emotional point of view.
“We had a big chance and I thought Zlatan was going to score. One zero, goodbye the game is finished, but we didn’t get the goal we wanted.”
Mourinho’s decision to select Ashley Young, Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini in a altered midfield raised eyebrows before kick off, but the trio put in a disciplined display as their manager hailed his side’s success.
“It is not the result we wanted, but it is a positive result, it is a result that stops a direct opponent getting three points at home so not a bad result,” he added.
“I think was a positive performance. If you analyse the game see the reason why did it, playing Young and Fellaini. We had control of the game – there were two amazing saves by David de Gea it’s true but they were out of context.
“The reaction from their crowd was permanent disappointment. People expected us to come here and be really in trouble, which we were not.
“The team was always comfortable, we lacked a little bit of sharpness in more attacking positions. There was a moment I thought about playing Rashford in the Pogba position behind Zlatan but then the kid had cramps.
“This is a point that stopped them winning three. Other candidates for the title have easier fixtures at moment and it is important to keep close to them. Our opportunity to get five wins in a row will come.”
