Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has claimed Javier Hernandez would have scored in excess of 20 goals this season if he was still at the club.

In what will be seen as another snipe at his misfiring forwards, the United manager as suggested the striker has scored goals aplenty for Bayer Leverkusen since his move from United in the summer of 2015 could have been an answer to his scoring problems if he was still at the club.

The striker known as Chicharito was a firm favourite at United in his first couple of seasons at the club, yet he fell out of favour before he was off-loaded by Louis van Gaal.

Now Mourinho has fuelled rumours that he may try to bring the 28-year-old back to the club, in comments that confirm he is eager to find strikers with a clinical finish touch.

“We have good players, they are creative players, they can create, but they are not the kind of guy that is naturally a killer,” stated Mourinho.

“I give a simple example -- in the way we play at Old Trafford, in the way we dominate opponents, in the way we play in the box, I think Chicharito would have scored 20 goals easy.

“Even coming from the bench for the last 10 or 20 minutes, he would have 20 goals. He is the guy that naturally the ball comes here, rebound here, rebounds there, boom, goal.

“The goalkeeper saves, he goes there, boom, goal. The cross is coming, he anticipates the first-post header, goal.

“I think Zlatan’s number of goals (27 this season) is a number for every striker. I think all the others, and I am not just speaking about the strikers, I am speaking about the attacking players with freedom, they have to reach always reach a certain number of goals which, when added between them, means a lot of victories, a lot of points, but no-one has reached that level.”

Mourinho went on to suggest a lack of fortune has combined with poor finishing in a season when his side have drawn nine Premier League game at their Old Trafford home.

“I think, clearly, if you go for example of Pogba, the number of posts he has hit are almost Guinness Book of Records and some of them would be amazing goals,” he stated.

“I remember a couple of direct free kicks hitting the post, they would have been amazing goals, you had lots of beautiful actions.

“It is not a problem of quality at all, it is a problem of luck.

“Many goalkeepers have become phenomenal at Old Trafford, so I think you give credit for the goalkeeper. We also have some players that are not really players in love with the goal.”

Mourinho also confirmed he would look to sign a striker this summer, although he was keen to promote the youthful qualifier of Marcus Rashford.

“We have Marcus, we believe in, that's no doubt,” he added.  “Are we going to buy a striker? Maybe, maybe.”
