Jose Mourinho confirms Man United have made third signing at initial press conference
Jose Mourinho held his first official press conference as Manchester United manager today.
The Special One made his official debut as Old Trafford boss this morning.
Among the more eye-catching of his quotes is the revelation that United have made a third signing.
However, the Portuguese refused to reveal the identity of the third transfer into the club under his reign:
Jose Mourinho confirms third player has been signed by Man Utd this summer, but he cannot confirm it yet. Must be Henrikh Mkhitaryan #MUFC— Kevin Palmer (@kpsundayworld) July 5, 2016
Deals have already been done for centre-half Eric Bailly and Sweden star Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
A deal for the Borussia Dortmund playmaker Mkhitaryan was already thought to be extremely close to completion, with a slip-up by the club's shop before a Dortmund tweet more or less confirming the 27-year-old's move.
Rumours have been rife that United are keen to bring former midfielder Paul Pogba back to Old Trafford, with a fourth signing being targeted by the new manager:
Mourinho also moved to dispel the myth that he is not a coach who consistently brings through academy players:
Mourinho brings out a prepared list. "You know how many young players I promoted from academies . . 49." Offering to read them all out.— Daniel Taylor (@DTguardian) July 5, 2016
While he also had something to say about the departure of Louis van Gaal's assistant manager and club legend Ryan Giggs:
JM: "It's not my responsibility that Ryan is not in club. The job Ryan wanted was manager's job. And the club decided that was job for me."— James Ducker (@TelegraphDucker) July 5, 2016
The former Chelsea boss will not have impressed his old employers by crowning United as England's biggest club:
Mourinho: "I am the manager of the biggest club in the country, so I don't have to look at the others too much. We have to focus on us."— Manchester United (@ManUtd) July 5, 2016
While it also sounds as though Alex Ferguson's influence at Old Trafford will not be diminished by Mourinho's arrival:
Mourinho on sir Alex: "He told me 'bring the umbrella...and the wine'. We will have lots of time to be together. It's an important opinion"— Guillem Balague (@GuillemBalague) July 5, 2016
Mourinho also hammered down the final nails into Wayne Rooney's midfield coffin:
That said, good line on Rooney as a midfielder: "You can tell me his pass is amazing but my pass is amazing too without pressure."— Darren Lewis (@MirrorDarren) July 5, 2016
