Fresh reports suggest that Borussia Dortmund have slapped a €45m price tag on Manchester United target Mats Hummels, but his club have moved to insist they still see the central defender as part of their future plans.

German sources believe Hummels has concluded the time is right for him to leave Dortmund this summer, with the German club putting a hefty price tag on his head as the Old Trafford club prepare to make their move.

While there were numerous reports suggesting Hummels may have moved to United in the last transfer window, that was always an improbable scenario at a time when Dortmund were struggling to retain their place in Germany's Bundesliga.

Yet now the World Cup winner appears to be preparing to make the next big move of his career, with Louis van Gaal identifying the 26-year-old as the centre-back he can build his side's defensive line around.

United appear to be on course to make a return to the Champions League for next season, yet Dortmund Sporting Director Michael Zorc suggesting his club do not expect their defensive talisman to leave.

"According to reports, Manchester United took the gloves off at least 13 times," he said, scoffing at reports that United have already held talks over signing Hummels in the past.

"Mats is an incredibly important player for us, with whom we continue to plan."

Whatever Zorc suggests publicly, it now looks increasingly likely that Hummels will be a big mover in the next transfer window and big-spending United appear to be at the front of the queue to secure his services.
