The Italian striker believes that one of his former teammates should leave Liverpool in January to join him at Ligue 1 side Nice.

Balotelli has urged Liverpool centre-half Mamadou Sakho to quit Anfield when the January transfer window opens.

The Nice forward wants the France international to return to his homeland and play for Balotelli's new club, Nice.

"I speak with him (Sakho) from time to time," Balotelli told the Liverpool Echo.

"I said to him: 'What a waste, a player like you is not playing'.

"He has to leave. I said to him: 'If you want, come to Nice'.

"I am going to speak to him about it. In January, it would be good."

The defender's future under Jurgen Klopp is non-existent, illustrated by the fact that Lucas Leiva is favoured over Sakho when one of the German's first-choice centre-half pairing of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren are unavailable.

Sakho hasn't played for the senior team since April and has not featured in a matchday squad under Klopp this season.

France manager Didier Deschamps is also of the opinion that Sakho needs to move in January, after the former PSG man decided not to go out on loan in September.

Deschamps said: "There has to be another solution for him to find another club in the January window."

Sakho has been quiet since a social media rant in September where he suggested that "lies" were being spread over his absence from the squad.

He recently told French TV: "I am very, very well. I have re-found my form. I still have my smile."
