Manchester United's Luke Shaw has taken the next steps on his road to recovery after he returned to light training on Monday morning.

Shaw has not kicked a ball in danger since an horrific leg break in United's Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven last September, but he taking small steps towards a first team return at last.

United boss Louis van Gaal confirmed that Shaw was set to return to the training pitches at United's Carrington HQ on Monday and the news was greeted with this positive message from his team-mate Juan Mata:

My friend @lukeshaw23 just came in from running out on the pitch! Getting closer 💪🏻💪🏻 🔴🔴

While Shaw has not given up on playing again this season, United boss Van Gaal has suggested the full-back may struggle to build up the strength he will needs in his legs to make a Premier League appearance before the final game of the campaign on May 15th.

It may be that Shaw will be working under a new United manager by the time he returns to first team action for real at the start of next season, as specualtion continues to swirl surrounding Van Gaal's future.
