Japan striker Yoshinori Muto is the latest goal scorer to be linked with a move to Manchester United, just a few months after he was rumoured to be on his way to join Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.

Mourinho spoke about Chelsea's moves for Muto earlier this year, but the deal to bring the striker who plays for German Bundesliga side Mainz dod not materialise.

Now the striker who has scored seven goals in Germany's top division this season is rumoured to be a possible target for United in next month's transfer window.

Cynics may question whether United's links with a player Chelsea were targeting a few months ago is evidence that Mourinho may soon be taking over as United boss, yet it may be that Muto's availability next month is a primary reason why he is on the shopping list for the Old Trafford club.

The Guardian are also reporting that Southampton forward Sadio Mane is another target for United next month, but a deal to sign the Senegal forward will be tough to complete after Saints boss Ronald Koeman insisted his club would not sell any of their stars in January.

United's eagerness to bolster their forward line is understandable after a tricky first half of the season, yet the superstar names the club have tried and failed to sign during 2015 will not be available next month.
