Manchester United striker Anthony Martial is set to have a scan on the foot injury that forced him to leave Wembley on crutches after he played for France in their 2-0 defeat against England.

French medical staff were unable to diagnose the extent of the injury in the immediate aftermath of the match, leaving United to make an assessment when their teenage striker returns to their Carrington training base on Wednesday.

There are fears that Martial may have suffered a metatarsal injury that would rule him out of action until the New Year.

That would be a hammer blow to United, who have relied on Martial to provide some spark in their attacking line since his £36m arrival from Monaco back in September.

France coach Didier Deschamps offered this brief diagnosis as he spoke to the media after his side's defeat as he stated: "It's a knock to the top of his foot."

"He's in quite a bit of pain after the match as a result of a play inside the area."

The Martial injury certainly means he is a big doubt to play in United's game against Watford on Saturday, with this video showing him leaving Wembley in discomfort on Tuesday evening:
