Manchester United have offered Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic a one-year contract to move to Old Trafford on a free transfer this summer, according to reports emerging from France.

Ibrahimovic said his farewells to Paris Saint-Germain last weekend after a successful spell in the French capital and is now lining up what is likely to be the last big move of his career as he approaches his 35th birthday in October.

According to French channel RMC Sport and their reporter Mohamed Bouhafsi, Ibrahimovic is weighing up a lucrative offer from United that includes an option for a second year on the deal.

This is the same source that broke the story suggesting United had made a €50m move to sign Anthony Martial last August, two days before the French youngster sealed his move to Old Trafford.

Ibrahimovic is believed to have requested information about United’s plans for this summer, with the future of manager Louis van Gaal under a huge cloud after he failed to guide the club back into the Champions League for a second season.

His predecessor David Moyes was sacked when he failed to secure a top four finish for United in the 2013/14 season, with this weekend’s FA Cup final date with Crystal Palace at Wembley delaying any decision on Van Gaal’s future.

Ibrahimovic had a fall-out with Van Gaal as their notoriously inflated egos clashed during their time together at Ajax over a decade ago and he has hinted that he would be reluctant to work under the Dutchman once again.

However, Ibrahimovic did enjoy a sparkling working relationship with Jose Mourinho during their time in tandem at Inter Milan and there is a suggestion that their partnership could now be revived at United.

Mourinho remains the red-hot favourite to take over at Old Trafford this summer, with the suggestion that the club have made an offer to Ibrahimovic offering a hint that they may be paving the way for Van Gaal’s exit in the coming days.
