Manchester United's eagerness to wrap up a deal for Barcelona's Pedro is likely to be hastened by reports that Bayern Munich have entered the race to sign the Spanish forward.

United have staged talks with Barcelona over a £22m deal for Pedro, who has been identified by United boss Louis van Gaal as the next piece he wants to add to his Old Trafford jigsaw.

The latest reports in Spain suggest United have reached an agreement with Barcelona over the Pedro transfer, yet Bayern Munich Pep Guardiola may be about to spice up the scramble for Pedro, amid suggestions that the former Barcelona boss is keen to snare a player he worked with during his time in charge at the Nou Camp.

With Bayern Munich wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery entering the final phase of their career, Guardiola may be eyeing up Pedro as a possible replacement for the ageing duo.

However, United remain firm favourites to land the 28-year-old Spain international, with Van Gaal keen to wrap up a deal for Pedro before Angel Di Maria completes his move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The whereabouts of Di Maria is something of a mystery right now, with the United manager admitting he had no idea where his £59.7m club record signing was after he skipped the club's pre-season tour of America.

"You can ask that every week, but it is the same answer," Van Gaal said in his news conference when asked about Di Maria. "Maybe you know? I don't know that either.

"With Manchester United, we shall announce something when it is already done and not when it isn't done, because it's a process.

"I have said that many times. We will have to wait and see and I don't want to interfere."

Meanwhile, United had a visit from a famous Irishman after the final game of their US tour, with One Direction's Niall Horan visiting the team dressing room after their 2-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain.
