Man Utd legend urges Giggs to reject Mourinho's job offer
Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has urged his former team-mate Ryan Giggs to reject the offer of a role with soon to be new Old Trafford boss Jose Mourinho.
Giggs has expressed a desire to manage the club he has been associated with for the last 29 years, with his 13 Premier League title winning medal highlighting his enduring legacy at United.
Having worked as an assistant to Louis van Gaal at United over the last two years, Giggs was hoping to succeed the Dutchman as the club’s next manager, yet his claims to the job have been overlooked in favour of the more experienced Mourinho.
That has inspired Schmeichel to suggest Giggs should finally end his time at United, in the hope that he can prove himself as a manager elsewhere before making a return to claim the top job at Old Trafford.
“I think Ryan’s big dream is to one-day manage Manchester United,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports.
“But I think he be equipped for that, he has to go away, he has to be manager of other clubs, standing on his own two feet, making decisions, producing results.
“I’d like to see him go away and come back some day prepared for the challenge. It is a hard job to be the manager there. It is not just something you step up and do.
“You’ve got to have so many different qualities and you only gain that by experience.”
Giggs has been offered a role on Mourinho’s coaching team, but it will not be a continuation of his assistant manager role that he has filled over the past two years.
There is a widespread expectation that Giggs will now leave United, yet Mourinho is keen to have the presence of a United legend with in his coaching set-up at Old Trafford, as he prepares to seal his move to Manchester in the next 48 hours.
