Manchester United legend Nemanja Vidic could be set for a shock return to the Premier League, with relegation-haunted Aston Villa believed to have offered a short-term deal to the Serbian defender.

Vidic has failed to impress since making a move to Inter Milan in the summer of 2014 and he had his contract cancelled earlier this week to pave the way for a final move for the 34-year-old.

While he is believed to have been offered a chance to move to America's MLS, a short-term stint at Villa could be attractive for the centre-back who won five Premier League titles during his time at United.

With Villa in a desperate position at the bottom of the Premier League table, they are reluctant to spent big on permanent transfers in this window.

That could pave the way to a four-month contract for Vidic, who could then pursue a career in America after a final few months in the Premier League.

It remains to be seen whether Vidic would still have what it takes to shine in the competitive English top flight, but it seems he is being tempted with a move that would give Villa a welcome boost.

If Vidic signs for Villa, he would have an emotional return to play against United at Old Trafford in mid-April.
