Man Utd and Chelsea target Mats Hummels prepares to make summer move
Mats Hummels look set to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, after he confirmed he is having “sleepless nights” over which club he will join this summer.
Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are among the Premier League giants believed to be chasing Germany World Cup winning defender Hummels, with his father and adviser Hermann suggesting a decision on where his on will play this season is imminent, with a move to Dortmund’s chief domestic rivals Bayern Munich also an option.
“Mats is facing a tremendously important decision in his career, in his life, similar to a woman who is 30 and has to decide now or never having children,” stated Hummels Snr, in a wonderfully inventive quote that is appearing in German publication Bild.
“Dortmund is back among the top clubs in Europe, so the decision is so hard for him. If he should leave Dortmund yet, then he goes to one of the five or six top clubs and to these clubs is one course of Bayern (Munich).”
Hummels, 27, came close to leaving Dortmund last year as Manchester United made him an offer to move to Old Trafford, but he decided to break off negotiations and remain at Dortmund for a final season.
Now it seems as if he is entering the final few weeks of his time with the club he has been with for the majority of his professional career, after he moved to Dortmund in 2008 after starting his career in the Bayern Munich youth team set-up.
“I’ve set a date, but I’m keeping it to myself,” Hummels told Sky Deutschland as he was asked about his plans for a summer move. “It’s costing me half an hour before bed every night.”
Hummels has previously hinted that he would like to test his skills in the Premier League, yet his father’s hint that he could re-join Bayern Munich suggests he could yet stay in Germany’s Bundesliga.
Liverpool may also be an option for Hummels due to his close ties with former Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp, but he is likely to make a move to a club that is playing Champions League football next season.
