Manchester United and Chelsea in race for defender ahead of transfer deadline day

Chelsea will offer competition in the transfer market to old manager Jose Mourinho with the Blues entering the race to sign right-back Fabinho, according to a report.

Manchester United look likely to face stiff competition in their bid to sign Monaco defender Fabinho.

The 22-year-old Brazilian managed an incredible six goals and four assists in 34 Ligue 1 appearances last season.

Usually deployed on the right-hand side of defence, Fabinho can also operate in central midfield.

According to French publication L'Equipe, Chelsea are plotting to steal the defender's signature from under Mourinho's nose.

The Stamford Bridge side will soon launch a £25m bid for the young defender, says the Telegraph.

The paper states that Monaco are confident of keeping hold of their star man as the club will feature in the Champions League this season.

The Red Devils can only offer Europa League football while Chelsea will take no part in European competition after a torrid 2015/16 campaign.
