Man United ready to push forward with £50m bid for their next target
Manchester United are set to step-up their efforts to sign Tottenham's Eric Dier, with reports suggesting the Old Trafford giants are willing to pay up to £50m to land the England midfielder.
Dier has emerged as a somewhat surprising name on Mourinho's transfer wish-list at United, with the utility player who has filled in at centre-back, full-back and in his preferred midfield role for Spurs in recent years being hailed as a possible replacement to Michael Carrick ahead of what may be his final year at Old Trafford.
While Tottenham have made it clear that they have no intention of selling the player they signed from Sporting Lisbon for just £4m in the summer of 2014, United are believed to have been encouraged by suggestions that Dier has decided he wants to make the move to Old Trafford.
Dier started 34 Premier League games for Tottenham last season, but he may not be viewed as a key figure in Mauricio Pochettino's line-up and United are increasingly confident that they can strike a deal for a player whose value has escalated since he made his breakthrough into the England squad.
After United's success in beating Chelsea to the signature of Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, Old Trafford chiefs are now keen to build on that signing by adding Dier and maybe even Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic to their ranks in the coming weeks.
Fresh reports in Italy claim a deal for Perisic could be edging closer, even though Inter Milan have insisted they are in no rush to sell their Croatian winger.
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Carrick will be United captain next season, with the most experienced player at the club assuming the role after the departure of Wayne Rooney to Everton last weekend.
