Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw has thanked hospital staff in Holland as he prepares to return home.

The England international suffered a double leg break in Tuesday's Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven and stayed on in the Dutch city for surgery.

He had been scheduled to undergo a second procedure at the St Anna Ziekenhuis hospital on Friday but will instead transfer to a hospital in Manchester for the completion of his treatment.

Shaw posted three pictures on Saturday morning of himself with hospital staff, accompanied by a note of thanks.

"I just wanna say a massive thank you to everyone at St Anna hospital for all the care and attention they have given me the last few days," he wrote. "Something I will never forget!

"Am pleased to be flying back to Manchester today so I can start my journey back onto the football pitch!"

The man who committed the challenge, Hector Moreno, and PSV coach Phillip Cocu, also visited the young United defender on Friday.

Shaw faces a recovery period of several months, with United manager Louis van Gaal suggesting the earliest he can expect to return is next March.
