Beleaguered Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is not expecting a call from Jose Mourinho if his old friend is in talks with the Old Trafford club about taking his job.

Mourinho is believed to have agreed a deal in principle to take over from Van Gaal next summer, with the Dutchman's grip on power at United loosened further by Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Sunderland.

Van Gaal and Mourinho are long-standing friends, but the veteran coach does not expect his youthful colleague to let him know if he is set to take over from him at Old Trafford.

“I wouldn’t expect Jose Mourinho to call me about that. In the football world that doesn’t happen. Nor will I ring him” stated Van Gaal.

“If I did, then you think the stories are right and it is not like that. I am not thinking like that.

“In the past, I was chairman of the coaches federation in the Netherlands and we had a rule that you can never talk with a club without informing the present manager.

“But in football it’s not usual that you speak with other managers like that.

"It wasn’t a good rule, no! Sometimes it has been broken by people and by managers. It is always like that. It is not always an honest world.”

United have declined to deny reports that they have held talks with Mourinho's representatives, with the former Chelsea boss also refusing to comment on his links with a move to Old Trafford.
