Sam Allardyce has deleted his Twitter account after a stream of abuse flowed into the social media site following his dramatic sacking as England manager last Tuesday.

Allardyce started this week looking forward to naming his second England squad on Sunday, ahead of what should have been his first home match against Malta at Wembley Stadium.

Yet the Daily Telegraph story that saw Allardyce advising reporters posing as businessmen on ways to get around transfer regulations brought a swift conclusion to his brief reign as England boss.

Now Allardyce appears to be stepping away from the game, with his management opting to delete a Twitter account that had gathered thousands of followers over the last year.

The account featured regular updates from Allardyce and was used heavily to promote his autobiography last year.

The @OfficialBigSam Twitter handle he was using has already been taken up by a new user, with the account quickly transformed into a parody account spouting nonsense such as this:

It seems as if the disgraced manager - who is currently trying to get away from the storm his sacking as England boss created after he took an impromptu holiday - is eager to step away from the spotlight after the most traumatic week of his career.
