Liverpool and Manchester United will go head-to-head in European competition for the first time on tonight as the two giants clash in the Europa League, with the next entry in this enduring rivalry set to add to some of these classic clashes.

Liverpool: 0 Man Utd: 1 (January 17th 2016)

The most recent meeting between the two sides came at a moment when Man Utd manager Louis van Gaal was under huge pressure, with Wayne Rooney's late winner securing a much-needed victory.

United: 2 Liverpool: 1 (February 11th 2012)

Poison was in the air as Patrice Evra and Luis Suarez went head to head for the first time since the latter was handed a 12-game ban for  racially abusing the United skipper. The handshake that never was dominated the headlines. 

United: 1 Liverpool: 4 (March 14th 2009)

Liverpool appeared to be rank outsiders in the title race, but they stormed back into contention with this famous victory at Old Trafford. Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were too hot for United to handle.

So many pieces of the jigsaw were required to fall into place for United to clinch their Treble and it needed two late goals from Dwight Yorke (below) and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to keep their FA Cup dream alive at the fourth round stage.
