Liverpool linked with Shane Long as Charlie Austin joins Saints
Reports in the press today say Liverpool are contemplating a move for Southampton striker Shane Long.
The Sun believe Jurgen Klopp will make a swoop for the Republic of Ireland forward as he looks to strengthen his attacking options this month.
Liverpool have been struggling for goals this season and have suffered a heavy number of injuries to players this term.
Danny Ings and Daniel Sturridge are both long-term fitness concerns while Christian Benteke is yet to prove himself at Anfield.
It is reported that an £8m bid would be enough to land Long.
Klopp has admitted he is in the market for a striker.
“Buying players is not too easy. We don’t have too many striking options that is true.
“It is the same with the centre-halves. Martin (Skrtel) will be a few weeks still. Dejan (Lovren), not fit. Mama (Sakho), problems. Kolo (Toure)? Experience. Very experienced! But he is great.
“So then we had to do something. We are always watching the offensive ends for what we can do. Probably, maybe or never. Then we have to make decisions about where we want to go.”
The rumours will no doubt be fuelled by the news that Charlie Austin has joined the Saints from QPR in a deal believed to be worth £4m.
The 26-year-old was one of the stars of last season, but his 18-goal haul in his maiden top-flight season was not enough to help the west Londoners retain their Barclays Premier League status.
Austin had been widely expected to leave Loftus Road over the summer but remained after QPR stood firm on their £15million valuation of the forward, whose contract expired at the end of the season.
However, the Hoops this week accepted what Press Association Sport understands to be a £4million deal for the striker, which was announced by the south coast club on Saturday lunchtime.
