Liverpool were on course to secure a valuable draw in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final clash against Villarreal in Spain, but a last gasp strike from Adrian denied Jurgen Klopp's men the result they craved and they head into the second leg at Anfield 1-0 behind.

Here is how the Liverpool players rated on a night when they could and should have snatched a vital away goal:

Simon Mignolet: Saved well from Tomas Pina in the first half but had little to trouble him until a good late save from Cedric Bakambu. 7

Nathaniel Clyne: Attacked well down the right but final ball let him down. 6

Kolo Toure: Another solid, no-nonsense performance from the Ivorian, right up until he allowed Denis Suarez to go past him for the goal. 6

Dejan Lovren: Did well to keep Bakambu under wraps for much of the game. 6

Alberto Moreno: Often left too much space behind him but that was partly because he was trying to offer an option going forward. Tightened up after the break. 6

James Milner: Put in plenty of leg work and improved after the break after a number of aimless first-half crosses. 5

Lucas Leiva: Usual reliable holding job in front of the two central defenders. 7

Joe Allen: Should have scored with Liverpool's first chance of the night but did not let that affect him and worked hard with and without the ball. 7

Adam Lallana: Flitted in and out the game but never really used the possession he had to do much damage. 5

Philippe Coutinho: Struggled to properly get into the game and was replaced at half-time due to illness. 5

Roberto Firmino: Energetic with a lot of pressing early on but struggled with ball retention and passing and faded apart from a shot tipped onto a post. 5

Substitutes

Jordon Ibe (on for Coutinho, 46): Brought on out of necessity rather than design and could not offer much penetration wide on the left. 4

Christian Benteke (on for Firmino, 90): No time to make an impact. 6
