Liverpool legend says Pogba needs to perform like Gerrard
Jamie Carragher has said that Manchester United new boy Paul Pogba needs to follow the example of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Yaya Toure to drag his new club back to winning ways.
In his Daily Mail column today, Carragher writes extensively about the French midfielder's mega-money arrival and while he doesn't deem the signing a gamble he does offer some advice to the 23-year old.
The former Liverpool defender says that for Pogba's second spell at Old Trafford to be a success he needs to perform in the biggest moments in the manner of three other Premier League midfield dynamos.
'They [Gerrard, Lampard and Toure] defined what a modern midfielder should be able to do and when you think of the great triumphs their clubs enjoyed - Chelsea winning their first title in 50 years, Liverpool’s first European Cup for 21 years, Manchester City’s first trophy for 35 years - they produced when it mattered.
'This is the challenge facing Pogba: can he drag United forward in the difficult moments?'
'If he can follow the example of Gerrard, Lampard and Toure, their chances of getting back to the top will be so much stronger. They are the measure.'
Carragher goes on to hail Pogba as a brilliant signing and a sign that the Premier League can once again attract the very best players in the world.
