Liverpool deny rumours of Ancelotti approach
Liverpool have moved to deny suggestions that they have made a tentative approach to recruit Carlo Ancelotti, as pressures continues to mount on manager Brendan Rodgers.
Reports in the Italian and UK media suggested Anfield chiefs have put out some feelers to assess whether former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Ancelotti may be interested in making his return to the game by taking over the Liverpool hot-seat.
Three-time Champions League winning manager Ancelotti is a prime candidate to replace Rodgers if Liverpool chiefs make a decision to replace their beleaguered manager, yet Anfield sources have moved to dampen down rumours than a change is imminent.
Former Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp is the long-time front-runner to take over from Rodgers if they Irishman is relieved of his duties, yet he heads into Wednesday night's Capital One Cup tie with Carlisle with his club apparently still backing him.
Last Sunday's 1-1 home draw against Norwich was the latest blow to Rodgers' hopes of winning over his critics, with the manager who was given a surprise stay of execution in his job last summer now fighting to hang onto the post like never before.
It may be that Rodgers is one more big defeat away from the axe, but Liverpool will be keen to play down that suggestion ahead of a run of games that includes clashes with Tottenham, Everton and Chelsea.
