Liverpool are closing in on the signing of striker Danny Ings, who is available on a free transfer after leaving Burnley.

Ings, 23, scored 11 goals in his first season in the Premier League with Burnley and he looks set to stay in the top flight as both Tottenham and Liverpool are vying for his services.

Yet after sealing a deal to sign James Milner on Wednesday, Liverpool are also set to wrap up the transfer of Ings in the coming days amid suggestions that a deal is close to being struck with the player and his advisors.

The move is being welcomed by Liverpool goal scoring great John Aldridge, who hopes it is the first of a couple of striking arrivals at Anfield this summer.

"I would be delighted to see Danny Ings coming in on a free," Aldo tells us.

"He showed he could play in the Premier League with Burnley and he will score goals if he gets the right service.

"Hopefully Liverpool are successful in their pursuit of Christian Benteke because he will score 20 goals next season if Liverpool use him in the right way.

"It has been so frustrating watching Liverpool this season because they lack of a cutting edge has been held them back from day one, but hopefully the club will address that this summer."
