Jurgen Klopp was "sounded out" about the prospect of taking over at Liverpool BEFORE Brendan Rodgers was sacked by the club last Sunday, according to reports.

Reports emerged last week suggested that Klopp's interest in the Liverpool job was assessed, with stories that he was ready to take over from Rodgers now appearing to have more than a little relevance.

Klopp is now the red-hot favourite to take over from Rodgers at Liverpool, with former Reds midfielder Dietmar Hamann being linked with a role on the German's backroom staff if he takes over at Anfield.

Hamann is backing Klopp to succeed at Anfield, as he wrote this on his Breath Sports blog:

‘Rodgers can’t have any complaints. The mood changed towards the end of last season and they could have sacked him in the summer but decided to change the backroom staff instead, which destabilised him further," he wrote.

"The replacement? I think Klopp is tailor-made for Liverpool. He works well at clubs that need rebuilding by bringing energy and enthusiasm. He speaks English and the fans will really take to him."

Liverpool's German star Emre Can has also backed Klopp's claims to the Anfield hot-seat, as he offered a polite reflection on the Rodgers era at Anfield.

"Jurgen Klopp is certainly a great coach," Can told Die Welt newspaper.

"I think he has demonstrated in Dortmund that he can match any team in the world.

"We had with Liverpool a dip that has cost us a few games.

"Although the focus is mainly on coach Brendan Rodgers, at the end we have players responsible for the situation in Liverpool. Rodgers has done good work - always."

Support for Klopp moving to Liverpool is widespread in his homeland, with Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, who was linked with a move to Liverpool last summer, backing his former boss to shine at Anfield.

"I've not had that much contact with him recently, and I've not followed much of what has been said, but I think Klopp would be a great fit at many clubs and I believe also at Liverpool," the Germany player said at a national team press conference.

"Of course it's something I can see happening. I think Klopp is capable of helping many top clubs in the world."

Klopp has also received backing from former Bayern Munich and Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn to succeed in England.

"I can definitely see it happening and there's absolutely no reservations at all in terms of his expertise," Kahn told Sport1 television.

"England would be the right next step for Klopp, also in terms of his personal development.

"Only the language may be a barrier. It's not that I think he would have a problem conversing in English, but when it comes down to motivating the team and his team talks - that's a small thing that may not translate so well.

"Jurgen's always been really good at motivating his players and that is what he would have to prove at Liverpool."

Liverpool are closing in on the appointment of a new manager and hope to have their man in place by the end of this week, with this image set to be repeated time and again in the years to come.
