Jose Mourinho wants Manchester United fans to forget the last three years of their club’s history after vowing to bring back the glory days to Old Trafford in his first interview as Old Trafford manager.
Speaking to MUTV shortly after signing his contract to take over as United manager, Mourinho suggested the club needs to get back to the golden era under Alex Ferguson as he suggested the less successful spells under Davis Moyes and Louis van Gaal need to be banished to the history books.
“I prefer to forget the past three years and I prepare to focus on the giant club I have in my hands now,” stated Mourinho.
“We can look at our club in two perspectives. One perspective is the last three years. Another perspective is the club history.
“What the fans expect me to say is I want to win. I need the supporters and the players that I say that and I think we can. Yes I want to focus on the history of this giant club and I will give absolutely everything to try to go in the direction we all want.
I know what they can give me and they know what I can give them.”
Mourinho went on to express his delight at succeeding Louis van Gaal as United manager, as he suggested the job has come his way at the perfect moment following his sacking from Chelsea last December.
“I feel great. I think it comes in the right moment of my career because Man Utd is one of these clubs where you need really to be prepared for,” he added.
“It is what I used to call a giant club and giant clubs are for the best managers. I think I am ready for it. I am happy, I am honour, I am proud, but what I want is to work. I cannot wait to go on the pitch.
“It is very important and curious that I played so many times against Man Utd at Old Trafford with other clubs and there was empathy, no problems. I was pushed at times to say some things that my clubs were not happy with. I remember when I won at Old Trafford with Real Madrid, I said the best team lost and not many people were happy with this at Real Madrid.”
