Republic of Ireland forward Jonathan Walters has handed in a transfer request at Stoke as he tries to force through a move to Norwich in the final hours of the transfer window.

Walters has been given permission by Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill to join up late with his squad ahead of the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against Gibraltar and Georgia, with a move imminent for the 31-year-old.

“There may be something happening with Jonny,” O'Neill told reporters. “There was little point in coming here and then maybe having to travel back.

“While there is the possibility of something happening to him then I think it’s best that he sees it from back there [in England] until the transfer deadline is finished.”

Norwich have already had offers to sign Walters rejected in this transfer window, but his decision to hand in a transfer request should propel the move forward ahead of the 6pm transfer deadline on Tuesday.

Walters will join up with his fellow Republic of Ireland internationals Wes Hoolahan and Robbie Brady at Norwich if the deal is completed.
