John O'Shea has been named as the Republic of Ireland's Player of the Year at an awards ceremony in Dublin that marked the start of a crucial week for Irish soccer.

Next Sunday's crucial Euro 2016 qualifier against Poland is now looming on the horizon, with Martin O'Neill squad set to gather to prepare for the game in the coming days, with O'Shea boosted by his nomination for the prestigious award.

Despite his uncertain form with Premier League relegation strugglers Sunderland, O'Shea has been a rock for O'Neill's Ireland in the last year as he picked up his 100th international cap and scored the thrilling last minute equaliser in the qualifier against world champions Germany in October.

Derby's Jeff Hendrick (below) picked up the Young Player of the Year award, while Aston Villa youngster Jack Grealish was named Ireland under-21 Player of the Year, as he confirmed he expects to return to action in a green shirt next season.

Grealish has been mulling over his international future as England and the Republic of Ireland battle for his services, but its seems he has his heart set on playing in a green shirt.

“I spoke to Noel King (Ireland under-21 coach) at the start of the year and I said I was going to take a year out of international football this year and try and concentrate on my club football,” said Grealish.

“I’ve had a good year at Villa and then hopefully next year I’ll be back playing again for Ireland.”
