John Aldridge rates the Top 5 Premier League strikers right now

It has been a strange season for strikers in the Premier League, as the star names we thought would be in the mix to win the Golden Boot have gone missing.

Chelsea’s Diego Costa has not fired and Blues boss Jose Mourinho has also failed to get anything out of Radamel Falcao after his surprise move to Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool’s main man Daniel Sturridge never plays, so it is very hard to give him any kind of rating.

Then you look at Wilfried Bony at Man City or Wayne Rooney at Man United and they are simply not doing the business.

With a third of this Premier League campaign now played, here are my top five strikers so far – with names I would not have expected to throw into the mix a few weeks

back near the top of my list.

1 - Sergio Aguero

If this brilliant striker is fit for the majority of the season he will win the Golden Boot and Man City will be champions.

Aguero is the best striker in the Premier League by a distance, but his fitness record is worrying from a City perspective and his extended spells in the treatment room will

give the rest hope of mounting a push for the title.

2 - Jamie Vardy

It’s great to see this guy taking his big chance in the Premier League after so many years battling in the lower reaches of the game.

Vardy has been a revelation for Leicester this season and his 12 goals so far confirm that he is in red-hot form, having scored in his last nine games.

Just for the record, I scored in 10 successive top-flight games for Liverpool, so you have not caught me yet Mr Vardy!

3 - Harry Kane

It was always going to be tough for Kane to follow up his breakthrough season at Tottenham with more goals, but the critics were far too quick to write off a player who oozes class.

Kane’s movement, passing and finishing in front of goal are top class and if Spurs can keep hold of him for the long term, he will be their key man in the push for Champions League football.

4 - Romelu Lukaku

Everton’s Lukaku is probably the best target man in the Premier League and he has backed up his credentials with goals this season.

Powerful, confident and in a great run of scoring form, it is easy to see why there is talk of big-money offers coming in for this Belgian forward.

5 - Christian Benteke

Would you rather have Benteke or Lukaku leading the line at your club?

I am happy to have Benteke at Liverpool and so long as they get the right kind of service into the box, he will score 20 goals this season. He has already scored four times in a Liverpool team that have not played to his strengths yet.
