Jesse Lingard reveals he turned down Liverpool
Manchester United starlet Jesse Lingard has revealed that he turned down the chance to sign for Liverpool before committing his future to the Old Trafford club.
Lingard has made a big impression in Louis van Gaal's United side in recent weeks and earned a quick fire call-up to the senior England squad as a result.
Yet his career could have taken a very different course if he had been tempted by the chance to sign for Liverpool when he was just seven-years-old.
"There was interest from Liverpool and I had to pick," Lingard told MUTV.
“I was at a local club called Penketh United and Mike Glennie, a Manchester United scout, came to watch me,” Lingard told MUTV. “He spoke to my grandad and offered me trials
“I was only young, but obviously my heart was with United at the time."
Lingard's lack of height was viewed as weakness in his make-up, but United stood by him and now they are getting the rewards.
“I think it’s just been an incredible experience, coming through from the Under-7s to where I am now and what I’ve achieved already,” he added.
“It’s been incredible and I can’t thank the United staff enough.
“They could have let me go because of my height and I would now be playing somewhere else but they stuck with me. They saw my ability and I’m thankful for that."
