Irish actor James Nesbitt admitted he "thought it was a wind-up" when he was asked to co-host the FIFA Ballon d'Or award - but he stole the show at the lavish event in Zurich.

Lionel Messi was crowned as FIFA World Player of the year for a fifth time, but it was Nesbitt's presentation that attracted much of the attention on Twitter and other social media sites.

Sporting a new hairdo that certainly made an impression on Twitter followers who were quick to post images of his one-time thinning locks, Man Utd fan Nesbitt behaved like a true fans as he was in the presence of football's superpowers.

This is how Nesbitt looked not so long ago, with the image he presented on stage on Monday evening confirming his hair has been impressively enhanced in recent years.

The hair debate aside, Nesbitt was a triumph as host, with his whit and charm adding some colour to what has a tendency to be a pretty boring event on the football calendar.

Taking selfies with FIFA World Player of the Year Lionel Messi and his hero Cristiano Ronaldo, the charming host was well received by the sporting heroes who must have wondered what he was doing there.

Messi also seemed content to pose for this snap with Nesbitt on stage:

Meanwhile, smartly dressed Barcelona star Neymar (below) chuckled away at Jimmy's jokes, which included a plea for Ronaldo to makes his dreams come true and return to Man Utd.

Nesbitt and his co-host Katie Abdou also appeared to commit something of a broadcasting error as the credits rolled on the ceremony, as they were critical of the organisers in comments that were picked up on air.
