Is this the craziest Tweet of 2016?

Ireland's Harry Arter and Shane Long did battle in Bournemouth v Southampton

If there is a prize for the quirkiest sporting tweet of 2016, then this message will be a strong contender.

It was as Southampton FC’s official Twitter feed gave their fans a minute-by-minute account of their game against Bournemouth on Tuesday night that Adongo Mutumbu turned himself into an instant social media celebrity.

After Saints tweeted out the slightly concerning news that fourth official Kevin Friend had been taken ill during their game at the Vitality Stadium, @Adongomutumbu offered up this remarkable response:

The fact that Mr Mutumbu has the image of a lion on his header photo appeared to confirm that this a joke account, but just for once on Twitter, it is a joke that makes you smile rather than cringe.

A Twitter debate was spawned from the message that inspired Mutubu to suggest reference to a lion was, in fact, a nickname used for his amateur side’s goalkeeper.

The idea of a goalkeeper biting a linesman somehow seemed to be a more acceptable scenario amid this bizarre debate that could only have taken place on Twitter.

Mutumbu’s follower numbers are certain to have been increased as his hilarious message earned him more than seven thousand retweets and we can only hope for a few more message of this ilk from the mysterious contributor.
