I'm Back! How Man Utd confirmed they have re-signed Paul Pogba
When the announcement finally arrived, it was as theatrical as we should have expected from a transfer that has dominated the headlines all summer.
Paul Pogba is a Manchester United player all over again, four years after he left Old Trafford for little more than a small compensation fee following a contract dispute with the club.
Costing around €100m, they have certainly paid a heavy price for their decision to allow one of the world's best players to slip through their fingers, but they are keen to make up for lost time as they parade Pogba as their new marquee signing.
A hype machine has built up around the imminent return of Pogba from the moment Jose Mourinho was appointed as United manager back in June and after weeks of false dawns over a transfer that appears to have been close to completion for the last six weeks, the news is finally confirmed.
At precisely 12.20am UK time, United’s Twitter feed kicked into life with a tease that suggested they were finally ready to confirm the €100m deal United fans have been waiting all summer to hear with this video tease:
That was followed a few minutes later by confirmation from the man himself that the deal had been finalised as four years after he left United following a contract dispute, the Frenchman declared: I’m back:
That before this iconic image of Pogba was posted on the club’s website:
The official confirmation had been made and then it was left to Pogba and United manager Jose Mourinho to offer their initial views on the deal, with the 23-year-old midfielder elated to be back in Manchester.
“I am delighted to rejoin United. It has always been a club with a special place in my heart and I am really looking forward to working with José Mourinho,” said Pogba.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Juventus and have some fantastic memories of a great club with players that I count as friends. But I feel the time is right to go back to Old Trafford.
“I always enjoyed playing in front of the fans and can’t wait to make my contribution to the team. This is the right club for me to achieve everything I hope to in the game.”
United boss Jose Mourinho offered up these words to toast the transfer: “Paul is one of the best players in the world and will be a key part of the United team I want to build here for the future.
“He is quick, strong, scores goals and reads the game better than many players much older than he is.
“At 23, he has the chance to make that position his own here over many years. He is young and will continue to improve; he has the chance to be at the heart of this club for the next decade and beyond.”
The final word of the night on the world record transfer was left to United’s sponsors Adidas, who offered up this video featuring rapper Stormzy, which has been ‘accidently’ leaked earlier in the evening.
So the hype is over and the talking and speculation can now stop. All that is left is for Pogba to prove he is up to the task of living up to his billing as the most expensive player of all time.
He could make his Manchester United debut against Bournemouth in the opening Premier League game of the season this Sunday.
