Manchester United have made Valencia defender Nicolas Otamendi one of their top transfer targets this summer - but the Old Trafford will have to pay €50m to seal a deal.

Reports last week suggested United already had a deal in place to sign central-defender Otamendi, after it emerged that German World Cup winner Mats Hummels has had a change of heart over a move to Old Trafford.

Now Valencia have responded to those comments by insisting they will not be hurried into selling their 27-year-old Argentine defender, as Valencia president Amadeo Salvo put a huge price tag on the player's head.

"Valencia do not give in to pressure from any agent or any comments," Salvo said via the club's Twitter account. "Valencia's position will always be the same. If Otamendi wants to leave he will have to say it publicly.

"If he wants to go he will have to come to the club, not an agent, and pay what the club decide he is worth, which is €50 million at least, and with the payment structure that Valencia decide.

"Otamendi is a Valencia player and we are extremely happy with him. Valencia have not received any offer. In any case Valencia are very happy with the player and we would like that he sees out his contract with us.

“We never received an offer for Otamendi and if you think I am lying, the club will verify that.

“Otamendi is not for sale. For that to change, the player first has to come out and publicly state that he wants to leave.”

Meanwhile, the player's agent Eugenio Lopez has confirmed he is keen to seal a move away from Valencia this summer.

“Nicolas told Salvo to his face that he wanted to leave Valencia in the summer,” Lopez told the Spanish radio station Cadena SER. “Nicolas is happy at Valencia and with the fans but he’s got an option to improve on a professional level.

“Nico is going to do everything to leave. There are a lot of conversations with clubs that want Otamendi.

"Nicolas loves everything at Valencia but, if the chance arose to leave, he’d do everything possible to make it happen.”

If United are keen to pursue their interest in Otamendi, the prize tag is unlikely to deter the Old Trafford club that seem determined to spend big once again this summer.
