Has Wenger helped to inflate the asking price on Mustafi?
Arsene Wenger's dithering in the transfer market appears to have inflated the asking price for one of his chief targets, with Valencia holding out for a big fee on their German defender Shkodran Mustafi.
Valencia were initially reported to be willing to accept an offer of around £25m for their German defender last month, but the latest rumours suggest that asking price has multiplied heading into the final 10 days of this summer’s transfer window.
The latest reports suggest Valencia are now demanding a massive £50m for 24-year-old Mustafi, a figure Wenger and Arsenal are highly unlikely to pay.
However, Wenger remains confidence that he can secure a deal that will give his injury-hit defence a much needed boost, as he confirmed to
French TV station SFR Sport: “Mustafi? We hope it will be done He is one of a number of players we are looking at. Negotiations are ongoing.”
Wenger rarely talks in such open terms about a potential transfer unless it is close to being completed and Arsenal fans will be hoping the deal can be done before next Saturday’s Premier League game against Watford at Vicarage Road.
Arsenal are already five points behind Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City after collecting just one point from their opening two games of what is already a troubled season.
