The future of Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick took a twist when Old Trafford legend Paddy Crerand appeared to confirm the veteran midfielder has signed a new one-year contract.

Crerand announced live on air that "Carrick has just signed a new one-year deal" before the lead presenter on the MUTV broadcast quickly backtracked and suggested the news has yet to be confirmed by the club.

Carrick is out of contract at United this summer and one of the first decisions for the club's new manager Jose Mourinho will be resolving his future before he is allowed to move to another club on a free transfer.

The midfielder who will celebrate his 35th birthday this summer has been at United since an £18m move from Tottenham a decade ago and the expectation was that he may have played his final game for the club.

Yet Crerand's comments suggest the veteran performer may still have a final year left in his United career, with Mourinho having the final say on whether he remains at the club after he succeeded Louis van Gaal as manager last week.

Carrick has offered few comments on his United future, but he is believed to be keen to stay on if he is offered the right deal, with Crerand's MUTV 'revelation' set to speed up the process of finalising his future.
