Manchester United fans have been handed a transfer deadline day boost....but it is not a big name signing that will lift spirits at Old Trafford.

The latest word from United suggests long-term injury victim Luke Shaw could be back in action sooner than expected, after he stepped up his bid to recover from a broken leg.

Shaw has been out of action since a serious leg break in United's Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven in September, with his manager Louis van Gaal unsure whether the full-back would return this season.

Yet sources close to Shaw are suggesting his latest medical update is positive, with the 20-year-old making swift progress in his rehabilitation programme, with the possible date for his return now moved forward to as early as next month.

Shaw has not posted an update on his Twitter account regarding his fitness, but sources close to the player have suggested he is eyeing up a return to first team action in the final weeks of the season, which may give him a chance to push for a place in England's Euro 2016 squad.

United's failure to land a full-back in the transfer window despite reported late interest in a loan deal for Arsenal's Mathieu Debuchy may have frustrated the club's supporters, yet Shaw's speedy recovering may have been a factor in the decision not to sign new defenders.

United's medical staff are keen not to inflate expectations surrounding Shaw's possible return, but there is increasing confidence that the player who started the season in fine form for United will be available for selection again soon.

That news will come as a boost to under-fire United boss Van Gaal, who has been forced to turn to youngsters Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Guillermo Varela in recent weeks, after a run of injuries to his defenders.
