Steven Gerrard appears to have confirmed that his time at LA Galaxy is coming to an end - in a move that will heighten speculation the MLS club are lining up a move to sign Man Utd captain Wayne Rooney.

Gerrard's future at Galaxy has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks, with his two-year contract at the MLS side set to expire in the next few weeks.

Now the former Liverpool skipper has posted an Instagram message that appears to confirm he will not be extending his stay in California into 2017.

Living in Los Angeles and playing for the great Galaxy supporters has been a privilege. You have made this place feel like home to me. This city and this club will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you #8

Gerrard has enjoyed mixed fortunes in America and it may be that he has decided the time is right for him to hang up his boots and focus on a possible return to Liverpool in a coaching capacity.

The message appeared to confirm that Gerrard would soon be leaving LA Galaxy and that will open up a door for the big-spending club to sign another marquee name, with out-of-favour United skipper Rooney one of their targets.

MLS chiefs have already contacted Rooney and United to assess his availability at the end of this season, with Galaxy one of the few clubs that could attract a player of his status.

Galaxy have yet to confirm whether club captain Robbie Keane will follow Gerrard out of the exit door, with the Irishman waiting to see if he is offered a new contract before revealing his future plans.
