Football gossip - Chelsea plotting sensational swoop for former player
Chelsea are reported to be looking at a former player to fix their striker shortage.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Chelsea are prepared to pay Everton £50m to take Romelu Lukaku from Goodison back to Stamford Bridge.
The Belgium international signed for Chelsea from Anderlecht in 2011 for £18m before being shipped out on loan to first West Brom and then the Toffees for the 2013-14 season.
Lukaku had a storming season on Merseyside, bagging 15 league goals and prompting Everton to splash £28m to make the move permanent in July 2014.
However, the Echo reckon Chelsea are ready to 'test Everton's resolve' with a bid of £50m for the striker who only made one league start during his spell with the Londoners.
The paper also reports that Everton want £65m for the striker, so the deal is still a long way from being complete.
It is suggested that Antonio Conte has turned his attention to Lukaku after being rebuffed twice by Real Madrid in attempts to sign Alvaro Morata.
There is a different line coming out of France though regarding Chelsea, with le10sport saying that Conte's men have bid €50m for PSG striver Edinson Cavani.
It all points to Chelsea's desperation to find a striker, and it looks like other clubs around Europe are happy to exploit that in the market.
