Eric Cantona has backed Jose Mourinho to bring trophies back to Manchester United, as he predicted they could still finish this season as Premier League champions.

The French legend who was instrumental in the success Alex Ferguson's United side enjoyed in the 1990s is backing Mourinho to shine after sealing a move to Old Trafford last summer.

"It's just the beginning. Manchester can still be champions," declared Cantona, in an interview with Portuguese daily newspaper Publico.

"Jose Mourinho is a successful manager at a successful club which this year has successful players," the former French international said in an interview published Wednesday in .

"But this is an extremely difficult championship, full of great teams and great managers like (Manchester City coach) Pep Guardiola."

United fans are counting down to their date with Liverpool at Anfield on Monday, with Old Trafford great Ryan Giggs suggesting club captain Wayne Rooney has not been helped by Mourinho since he took over as the club's manager.

Mourinho made it clear that he did not want Rooney to occupy a midfield role in his team and just handful of games into the season, he was dropped for woeful displays in his attacking role.

"I feel a little bit sorry for him," said Giggs during his ITV punditry stint. "I think he confused where he is meant to play.

"Towards the end of last season, and for England in the summer, he was playing in that deeper role.

"And then, he gets told at the beginning of the season he's going to play either number nine or number 10."
