Dublin punter scoops €25k from €5 football accumulator
ONE northside gambler will be buying a turkey bigger than the rest this Christmas - after scooping a whopping €25,000, from just a fiver bet.
The bet was placed at a Ladbrokes on North Strand on Saturday - the odds working out as an incredible 5,000/1 winner.
Though the victor does not wish to be named, he is said to be a regular in the north-inner city Dublin betting shop.
A €5 accumulator bet on the football is commonplace among punters across the capital on weekends - though the rewards are usually few and far between.
What made this flutter even more special were the teams chosen - none of which were the run of the mill English Premier League sides that are most popular in the Irish betting stakes.
The customer placed a 'Result Rush' bet, which saw him correctly predict whether both teams would score and the winning team of six matches over the weekend.
The teams chosen ranged from countries such as Italy, Poland and Romania.
Spokeswoman for Ladbrokes, Hayley O'Connor, told the Herald that the customer was certainly no mug when it came to hedging his bets - and that it was clear a serious bit of research was put in.
"For us this is the nightmare before Christmas," Ms O'Connor said.
"For our customer, the festivities begin in the North Strand this year, not the North Pole, but rather than act the Grinch, we'll wish him well.
"He's clearly not a fair-weather football fan and his interest in this case has paid off.
"It's definitely not your average accumulator."
With the exact odds of 4995/1, the Ladbrokes punter will be collecting €24,777.90 for his fiver stake.
"He hasn't collected his winnings yet, but he certainly knows he won," Ms O'Connor said.
