Martin O'Neill has been dealt a big blow as Everton midfielder Darron Gibson looks set to miss the rest of the season after he fractured his fifth metatarsal bone in his foot.

The injury-prone midfielder was forced to pull out of Ireland's 1-1 draw with Poland in Dublin last Sunday with a stomach problem and this latest setback will come as a major blow to Ireland who looked devoid of any creativity in the centre of the park against the Poles.

Gibson's injury setback was confirmed by this message from Everton on their Twitter account, which suggested "surgery may not be required" for the 27-year-old former Manchester United midfielder.

The unlucky former Manchester United man has been dogged by injuries in the past few years and missed most of the 2013-14 season with a knee injury.
