Argentina boss Gerardo Martino has confirmed striker Sergio Aguero will miss the World Cup qualifying clash with Paraguay next week.

The Manchester City man suffered a hamstring injury in the first half of Thursday night's 2-0 defeat to Ecuador and had to leave the field on a stretcher.

He is set for a scan on Friday and Martino has ruled him out of Tuesday's clash with Paraguay.

He said: "He was moving very well and causing a nuisance until the injury. We hope he recovers well, but obviously he's a player we will lose."

Martino's men floundered without Aguero as they slipped to a first defeat on home soil since 2009 , with goals from Frickson Erazo and Caicedo in the space of 120 seconds giving Ecuador a famous win.

And the boss knew his side were well beaten.

"It really was a bad night. Ecuador beat us, waited and hurt us. Most of our play was loose. The analysis gives us too much to talk about," he said.

Ecuador manager Gustavo Quinteros believed his side's second-half performance was worthy of the win.

Quintero's men looked like they would have to settle for a point, but their domination was finally rewarded by quickfire goals from Frickson Erazo and Caicedo in the 81st and 82nd minutes respectively.

"The boys will always give everything," he said. "But I think the best of Ecuador was in the second half. Argentina was a tough opponent, despite not having Messi.

"The boys will always give everything and now the focus is on Bolivia where the aim will be the same - to win.

"We produced 90 per cent of the game plan and have a very good result. The fighting spirit we have in this squad gave the victory to Ecuador."
