Have you heard the one about the Manchester United star caught up in a flaming hot tub drama?

You might expect some witty line to follow involving a young lady who maybe should not have been in the bubbling pool with a millionaire Premier League star, but this turned out to be a little more serious for United defender Chris Smalling.

When firefighters spotted smoke behind the lavish home owned by the England defender last night, they were quick to act and quickly realised that one of Smalling's expensive toys had malfunctioned.

“Just after 8pm on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, a crew from Altrincham Fire Station attended a house in Altrincham after reports of a fire in a back garden," said a spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

“Police were in the area when they spotted smoke and reported a fire to our control centre.

"When we arrived it was quite a large fire involving a whirlpool bath and decking, which could have easily become something more serious.

"The police officers who were at the scene used a garden hose on the fire and when we arrived we extinguished it using a hose reel. The most likely cause was an accidental electrical fault.”

Smalling was not present when the fire took hold, with the footballer posting a picture of his night out with pals playing poker on his Instagram account.

Hot tubs may be associated with heated action under the bubbles, this was taking things a little too far!
