Liverpool look set to win the race to sign Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke after triggering the £32.5m release clause in his contract.

The 24-year-old striker is set to travel to Merseyside for a medical imminently to complete the formalities of the move, with Liverpool spending some of the money their received from the £49m sale of Raheem Sterling to Manchester City.

It was reported in recent days Manchester United were in for the goal-getter, but it seems Liverpool have beaten them to his signature.

Benteke would be Liverpool's second most expensive signing of all time after Andy Carroll, yet rival clubs could not make a move to sign the Belgian if they are willing to match the £32.5m fee offered by the Anfield club.

Assuming Liverpool do not have any rivals for his signature, Benteke will join James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez, Roberto Firmino and Nathaniel Clyne in a revamped squad for the new season.
