Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has claimed it "makes him laugh" when Manchester United are linked with moves to sign Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo.

Lawrenson was speaking to LFC TV during their broadcast of Sunday's game against United, with the former Republic of Ireland defender scathing in his assessment of Louis van Gaal's side.

United won the game 1-0, but Lawrenson has been less than impressed with their form throughout this season and suggested the world's top players would not want to sign for the club under Van Gaal's watch.

"It does make me laugh when they say we're going to sign Ronaldo, we're going to sign Bale....they wouldn't go and play for Man United," argued Lawrenson.

"They wouldn't get any chances. Ronaldo, he wouldn't have a hissy fit would he? I've seen quite a few of their games at Old Trafford and it's football by stealth."

Lawrenson believed Liverpool were unfortunate to lose to a late Wayne Rooney goal on Sunday, as he suggested Liverpool needed to be more clinical with the chances they created.
