Arsenal join race for Manchester United and England defender

Manchester United defender Phil Jones is wanted by a number of Premier League clubs including bitter rivals Arsenal, according to a report.

Phil Jones' future at Old Trafford under Jose Mourinho is in limbo.

Earlier today, Stoke City assistant manager Mark Bowen appeared to confirm that the Potters are in talks to bring the England international to the Britannia Stadium.

"He [Jones] did well as a youngster, got the big move, but it hasn't worked out for him there," Bowen told the Stoke Sentinel.

"I don't know how close we are or how far down the line it's gone.

"I don't know what's gone wrong, but he's gone from even a player Fergie was talking about as being someone who could have been one of the greats.

"But we have a bit of reputation for bringing players like that into this set up and then thriving. Fingers crossed, something may happen."

Now, it is being reported that Arsene Wenger's hunt for a defender has seen Jones end up on the French manager's transfer shortlist.

The north London club's desperation to sign a new centre-half before the transfer window closes means that the 24-year-old has ended up in Arsenal's sights, according to the Telegraph.

Former Red Devils defender Jonny Evans is also said to be part of Wenger's list but West Brom have quoted the Gunners an enormous fee for the centre-half.

Meanwhile, Valencia have told Arsenal that top defensive target Shkodran Mustafi is not for sale.
